Business of electronic publishing

NY POST -- The New York Post reported how the online edition of the Wall Street Journal is affecting the paper's economics. In his article, Paul Tharp writes: "Earnings plunged by 54 percent at the newspaper's parent Dow Jones & Co., with its fledgling online operations earning more money for the first time than the flagship Journal and the weekly Barron's." As do several other readers of , I pay WSJ around €50 annually for access and it's worth the money because I cannot get daily Wall Street reporting any other way deep in County Tipperary, Ireland. It seems that my need for news is similar to thousands of others.

The act of invoicing

TIPPINST -- We are exploring ways to give 24-hour legs to our recent acquistion of Acrobat 7 Professional. When we use taxpayer funding to purchase commercial items like the €240 upgrade to Acrobat Writer, we must leverage the purchase to ensure it has the greatest utility. Opening the S700i

from Aidan Doyle in the TippInst Skunkworks

S700iThe Sony Ericsson's S700i is a serious piece of machinery wrapped in a ridiculous cover. You would think getting used to all the options the phone has being the problem, but NO! Several authors of have S700i phones and that means they have problems taking off the back cover. It is a very slippery surface and the scratch-resistant design does not help your grip. After a few tries I succeed in getting it off and I took some photos along the way. I put instructions on how to open the cover in our sightings photo album.

Seeing hidden feeds

SKUNKWORKS -- We're spending part of April with hidden feeds that we've discovered in our trawl of popular weblogs. Those feeds generate from password-protected . Sometimes you need a user name/password sequence to get the feed. Other times, the feed is sitting opening in a location where it can be read without challenge. We have discovered no State secrets while foraging for hidden feeds. The potential for a hidden blog with open feeds intrigues us because that means you could produce a taster of content through the same weblog that you've locked down with password restrictions.

Pets as Movie Extras

MOVIE PETS -- Many authors of have photogenic pets that could do well being listed as a movie extra by an Irish website. There's good discussion on Irish Animals about the concept, and several long-time members of the community have started carrying signature elements containing their pets' pictures. Sign up--your pet could be a star.
