Watermarks

TAINT -- We spend a few hours devising logos as images that we use as parts of watermarks on web items. Photoshop allows you to overlay one image on top of another, using transparency to control the opacity of the watermark. Justin Mason suggests a lower-cost alternative. It's important to watermark to protect copyright.

I. The First Introduction

THAT'S RIGHT. I know it sounds like an ad for some sleazy writers' school, but I really am going to tell you everything you need to pursue a successful and financially rewarding career writing fiction, and I really am going to do it in ten minutes, which is exactly how long it took me to learn. It will actually take you twenty minutes or so to read this essay, however, because I have to tell you a story, and then I have to write a second introduction. But these, I argue, should not count in the ten minutes.

Messenger Shortcut

YAHOO -- A fun shortcut with Yahoo! Messenger is invoking search while in the middle of a messaging session. I occasionally chat with people who are thinking about visiting Ireland. I like to take them into southeast Ireland through pictures so they actually book into accommodation here. I can find pages related to things in Kilkenny by entering "s:kilkenny castle" into the conversation window. That generates a search and gives both of us useful results.

Hyperlocal Journos

GILLMOR -- Students at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism have been conducting work with "hyperlocal citizens." Their experience will prove useful for similar ventures in Ireland. As Dan Gillmor reported in We The Media, they set up "goskokie" ("news for the people, by the people") to cover the Chicago suburb of Skokie. Working with local people, they've created something valuable.

Macromedia J2EE

CNET -- Macromedia has released its first major extension for Flex, server software introduced earlier this year as part of a drive to expand use of the company's Flash format. The new Flex Builder package is a set of design and development tools intended to help developers quickly build applications in Flex, which has largely been used to create slick interfaces for Web applications.
