Finding PR at the Oscars

QUESTION -- "Perhaps the most important PR activity for a film occurs in the process of ensuring it receives critical acclaim. Describe three specific strategies successfully employed by film companies, animation studios and festival directors."

This question relates directly to Irish Oscar nominees.

From Denise Kelly:

PR firms are responsible for organising premieres. By having a premiere and inviting the right audience, a film can get good publicity from all media. If the premiere has the right guests wearing the right clothes, it will attract and maintain attention. If it's a high profile event, the right people will want to be there. This attention will attract the target public's attention, they will want to know who's who, what it's about, where it is on, when and how to see it.

From Aedin O'Shea:

Animation studios in particular advertise movie mercahdise; hats and t-shirts wih favourite characters printed on them. These, along with poster and billboard advertisements create a hype and excitement, which encourages people to go.

Other comments cited goody bags, media paks, and other giveaways designed to enhance a film's social currency.
